Preschool
Combo
Combo classes serve as an introduction to the dance class setting, concepts, and etiquette required for a successful first year! Our littlest students study 30 minutes of Ballet and Tap, incorporated with fun activities. Educating dancers early and correctly provides a strong foundation your dancer will benefit from for years to come. We offer these classes for children 3-6 years of age based on the current year.
Studio K Spotlight: Combo classes are capped at an enrollment of only 12 students. All classes have an assistant to ensure students are receiving constant attention and guidance. Most importantly, our Preschool classes are taught by the Studio Owner and the Assistant Artistic Director.
Ballet
Ballet is the foundation of all dance. It builds strength and flexibility while instilling grace and coordination in a dancer. It is a strict discipline that requires dedication and determination. Serious dance students are encouraged to take more than one hour of ballet a week. We offer Preschool classes through Advanced levels, including Pointe. Advanced students will be put on pointe at the Instructor’s discretion.
Studio K Spotlight: Studio K has concentrated on bringing only the best to our acclaimed ballet program. Instructor, Debbie Prado was on the original staff of the dance department at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. Instructor, Jennifer Turbyfill was hand-picked to study under the world-renowned ballerina Suzanne Farrell. Suzanne Farrell was the muse for the acclaimed New York City Ballet Choreographer, George Balanchine.
Jazz
Jazz is an upbeat and energetic form of dance. Focus is on technique and building the dancer’s ability to execute and perform a variety of movements and combinations. Ballet classes are also recommended in conjunction with jazz classes in order to enhance the jazz dancer’s skills. We offer Beginning through Advanced study for jazz.
Studio K Spotlight:Studio K Dance is unique because we have the perfect balance of classes that are for both recreation and competitive tracks of dance. Our classes are structured so no student is “stuck” in a level. We continue to evaluate our dancers to ensure that they are in a class that is challenging and engaging for them. In addition to the fact that our jazz classes are taught by the Studio Owner and Artistic Director, we are very privileged to have a former Mr. Dance of Florida on our teaching staff, Max Sjostrom.
Tap
Tap is a rhythmic form of dance that is performed in special “tap shoes”. Complex sounds, beats, and rhythms are executed through the feet. This fun and entertaining form of dance creates its own music and is especially rewarding. Tap dancers learn to become musicians and will increase their musicality and promote awareness in other dance styles. We offer Preschool through advanced classes and Adult Study.
Studio K Spotlight: We go beyond the shuffle and time step! Classical aspects of tap are introduced in class along with a good amount of hoofing technique. Students will receive a good mix of training in traditional and innovative tap routines. Niki Stokes teaches all tap classes and is the Tap Ensemble Director at LaVilla School of the Arts.
Hip-Hop
Hip Hop classes are fast-paced, challenging, and fun-allowing dancers to emphasize their creative and rhythmic talents. This style is loosely structured and permits students to interpret the moves in varied ways. Many guys find that hip hop classes are wonderful way to discover their place in the dance studio. A jazz class is also beneficial to hip hop dancers to increase their technical abilities as well. We offer beginning through advanced levels, starting with the Kindergarten aged child through the Adult crowd!
Studio K Spotlight: We are very excited to offer our students the opportunity to experience hip hop classes. Hip hop has been around since 1976 and continues to develop and transform as an art form. Younger hip hop classes focus on “Girl Power” and athleticism. All hip hop classes are a great way for apprehensive students to experience dance and come away with a greater appreciation for movement. Studio K Dance only allows age-appropriate music, moves, and costumes.
A quick word about Hip Hop’s “Bad Rap”: It is unfortunate that hip hop has acquired an unpleasant image because certain studios/instructors are not held to a higher standard. Please do not assume that all studios are the same and are held to the same level of principles. Studio K Dance never has or never will accommodate any instructor or guest artist that chooses ANY material not appropriate for children.
Lyrical & Modern
Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques. Lyrical movements are connected and flowing to attempt to tell the story of the music and express inner emotion. Contemporary modern and Limón techniques are the main focus in the modern class. This rewarding art form is only offered to students 4th grade and up for the beginner to advanced dancer.
Studio K Spotlight: We believe that classical and contemporary modern techniques are an integral part of the development of any dancer on a pre- professional track. Lyrical is also very rewarding for teaching body awareness and expressive movement for the recreational dancer. Modern is an art form lost in many studios, but continues to be a thriving force in universities and in the professional dance world. We are proud to introduce Cunningham, Graham, Horton, and Limón modern dance techniques. Instructor, Ms. Turbyfill incorporates contemporary modern techniques and demonstrates how modern companies, such as Doug Varone and Dancers and Urban Bush Women, are pushing the dance world forward. “Congratulations to Ms. Turbyfill for becoming a dance faculty member at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.”
Musical Theatre
This class is designed to help our students become a triple-threat performer. Voice, acting, and movement are the focus throughout the season. It is imperative that actors and vocalists are able to dance and that they are exposed to all styles. We will incorporate countless dance techniques into the class and perform them on stage as well. Guest Artists will visit the class to teach and offer insight into their craft! This exciting class is now offered to students 6 years and up for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced student.
Studio K Spotlight: Ms. Niki Stokes, the proud owner of Studio K Dance, has served as choreographer for a significant amount of musicals in the greater Jacksonville area. Niki has worked closely with some of Jacksonville’s most outstanding Directors and Musical Directors, including Shirley Sacks, Matt Hemphill, Lee Hamby, Ellen Millegan, and Laura Pedon. Venues include Theatre Jax, Players by the Sea, and Stanton College Preparatory School (regular season shows and summer programs). Ms. Stokes believes that all actors and vocalists deserve to add dance to their repertoire and feel confident in all of their abilities on stage. Most recently, she has added Best Choreography to her credits from Players by the Sea for her work on the eccentric musical “Bat Boy”.
Acrobatics
Acrobatics involves balance, agility, and coordination. Students, along with the help of their instructors, will set attainable goals, strive to achieve them, and go beyond the limits of gravity! It encompasses movements requiring physical strength, flexibility, and kinesthetic awareness. Our staff is trained in providing a safe and structured class atmosphere. We offer beginning through advanced levels, starting at the age of 5 years.
Studio K Spotlight: All of our acrobatics classes boast an instructor and a second, well-trained, adult assistant/spotter. Lead instructor, Beth Higgins was a nationally recognized gymnast. She also traveled to participate in the Junior Olympics at the height of her phenomenal training. Studio K Dance is very proud of the tricks, stunts and gravity-defying work our students regularly perform in class and on stage.
